basilar artery, caudal part of rhombencephalon, cranial accessory nerve (XI), geniculate preganglion (CN VII), glossopharyngeal preganglion (CN IX), median sulcus, mesencephalon (midbrain), occipital dermatome, pharyngeal groove 1, primary head vein, spinal accessory nerve (CN XI), sulcus limitans, trigeminal preganglion (CN V), vagal neural crest (CN X), ventral edge of rhombencephalon

A section through the mesencephalon, rhombencephalon and dorsal part of the first branchial groove.

Observe:
1. The ventral edge of the rhombencephalon in the midline.
2. The caudal part of the rhombencephalon that will become the medulla oblongata.
3. The mesencephalon in transverse section.
4. The distal part of the four cranial neural crests (V, VII, IX and X) that enter the dorsal part of the branchial arches.
5. The close relation of the vagal crest (X) to the lateral side of the primary head vein.
