Fact Sheet - SIDS
More Options...
SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age.
Most SIDS deaths occur between the ages of 2 and 4 months.
The successes of the NICHD-led national Back to Sleep campaign are associated with a large decrease in the number of infants placed to sleep on their stomachs and a 40% reduction in U.S. SIDS rates between 1992 and 1998. As a result, about 2,000 fewer babies now die each year than was the case in 1992.
Since the national “Back To Sleep” campaign was initiated in 1994, SIDS rates have dropped over 40% nationwide. “Back To Sleep” is a national, public education campaign encouraging health care providers and the public to put infants to sleep either on their backs or their sides.
